Who is it for?
Code 95 training is relevant to professional drivers of vehicles in categories C1, C1E, C, CE and D1, D1E, D, DE. Legal exemptions may apply to certain activities, so check the requirement against the work you do.
Holding a category C or D licence does not in itself mean that you also hold the corresponding professional qualification.
Initial qualification and periodic training
Initial professional qualification training is for drivers obtaining that qualification. Depending on your circumstances and the programme, standard or accelerated training may apply. These routes are different from periodic Code 95 renewal.
Periodic professional training is intended to maintain and develop your qualification. LTSA specifies a 35-hour course every five years. If completed in separate parts, each part must be at least 7 hours long.
Goods and passengers — separate specialisms
Goods and passenger transport programmes share some topics, but the professional tasks differ. Goods transport focuses on loads and load securing, while passenger transport covers passenger safety and service.
If you already hold an initial qualification for one type of transport and wish to qualify for the other, a qualification extension programme may apply. We review your existing documents to identify the appropriate training route.
What happens after training?
Completing training and formally documenting your professional qualification are related but separate steps. You must meet the requirements of your chosen programme and any applicable competence assessment.
The validity of Code 95 is confirmed by a document specified by law, such as a driving licence bearing Code 95 and a date, or a driver qualification card. Please check the document issuance procedure and the option appropriate for you with Regitra.
Frequently asked questions
Are Code 95 and category C the same thing?
No. A licence category entitles you to drive the relevant vehicle, while Code 95 confirms your professional qualification. You may need both for professional driving.
What is the difference between initial and periodic training?
Initial training leads to a professional qualification. Periodic training is intended to maintain and develop it regularly. Course length alone, or an informal description such as ‘long’ or ‘short’, is not a reliable way to choose the right programme.
How often does Code 95 need to be renewed?
Periodic training takes place every five years. Check the exact date on the document confirming your qualification and plan your training in advance.
